Honey Fair · September 12–13, 2026 · Aberdeen, South Dakota
Aberdeen anchors the James River Valley in northeastern South Dakota, where the Missouri Coteau's glacially formed prairie potholes and wetlands create extraordinary pollinator habitat across the Coteau des Prairies. The area's beekeepers work vast stretches of sweet clover, alfalfa, and native wildflower prairie, producing the mild, clean-flavored honey characteristic of the Northern Great Plains. The Aberdeen Glacial Plains show, held at Brown County Fair Grounds, features a SDHPA honey judging competition, hive inspection demonstrations, and agricultural exhibits celebrating the region's wheat, sunflower, and flax crops that support both farming and beekeeping. Educational programming from SDSU Extension covers overwintering colony management for South Dakota's challenging continental winters.
