Bayfield Apostle Islands Honey & Lake Superior Heritage Festival 2033

Honey Festival · August 23–24, 2033 · Bayfield, Wisconsin

Bayfield — gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the northernmost tip of Wisconsin's Bayfield Peninsula on Lake Superior — anchors Bayfield County's extraordinary honey landscape at the northern frontier of Wisconsin's agricultural-Northwoods transition zone. Bayfield County's honey traditions reflect the exceptional ecology of the Great Lakes' largest lake shoreline and the adjacent lake district of Wisconsin's northern highlands. Basswood (Tilia americana) is Bayfield County's most prized honey plant: the linden forests of the Bayfield Peninsula and the Apostle Islands' wooded shores produce a premium light-amber basswood honey in July — harvested at the northernmost productive range for this species — that Wisconsin beekeepers prize for its exceptional delicacy. Wild raspberry (Rubus idaeus) from the forest edges and clearcut margins of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest provides a clean light June honey. Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) from forest disturbances throughout the county adds a premium late-summer harvest. Sweet clover from roadsides and agricultural margins contributes through summer. Goldenrod from the Northwoods' forest edges closes the season in September. The 22 Apostle Islands — accessible only by boat or ice — are an internationally recognized freshwater archipelago. The Bayfield Apple Festival — one of Wisconsin's most beloved fall events — celebrates the town's remarkable ability to grow apples at the extreme northern end of their viable range in Lake Superior's moderated microclimate. The festival at Brownstone Park on the Lake Superior shorefront celebrates Bayfield's lakeside heritage and Bayfield County's exceptional Northwoods honey traditions.
