Honey Festival · June 26–27, 2027 · Kealakekua, Hawaii
Kealakekua — the storied bay on Hawaii Island's Kona coast where Captain Cook made his historic landfall, nestled in the heart of the Kona coffee belt at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 feet on the western slopes of Mauna Loa — offers one of the world's most distinctive honey landscapes, where macadamia nut blossom, Kona coffee blossom, Christmas berry (Schinus terebinthifolius), ohi'a lehua, and a rich assortment of tropical flowering trees and native Hawaiian plants create a honey flow unlike anything on the American mainland. The Kona Farmers Union Cultural Center's scenic Kealakekua Bay venue hosts this late-June festival celebrating the extraordinary botanical diversity of Hawaii Island's honey production, featuring Big Island beekeepers who tend hives within the coffee belt's ideal climate of warm days, cool nights, and reliable rainfall that produces the rich, aromatic macadamia-and-coffee-blossom varietal honeys most prized by Hawaii honey connoisseurs. Hawaii Island's honey heritage encompasses an extraordinary range of varietals by elevation and district: the Kona coast's macadamia and coffee blossom honeys at middle elevations; the Christmas berry honeys of lower coastal areas; the rare ohi'a lehua blossom honey of native forest uplands; and the lychee, avocado, and tropical orchard honeys of the Hamakua and Ka'u districts — making Big Island one of America's most biodiverse honey-producing regions. The festival features tasting flights of Kona-district honey varietals with coffee pairing; educational programs on Hawaiian honey bee management in tropical conditions; demonstrations of small-scale Hawaiian honey processing; artisan vendors featuring macadamia products, Kona coffee, and Hawaiian beeswax candles; cultural presentations on the role of bees in Hawaiian agriculture; and guided discussions on the conservation of native Hawaiian flowering plants for bee forage.
