Honey Festival · July 25–27, 2027 · Decatur, Alabama
Decatur — Morgan County's Tennessee River city at the heart of Alabama's fertile Tennessee Valley — sits within one of the most productive agricultural and wildflower honey landscapes in the Deep South, where the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge's bottomland hardwoods, the surrounding cotton and soybean fields, and the river-bottom wildflower meadows of the Tennessee Valley create an exceptional honey flow supporting thriving beekeeping communities across Morgan, Lawrence, Limestone, and Madison counties. Point Mallard Park's scenic Tennessee River waterfront hosts this late-July festival celebrating Alabama's Tennessee Valley honey heritage, featuring beekeepers from the Wheeler Refuge corridor who produce the distinctive sweet clover, cotton blossom, tulip poplar, and mixed-wildflower honeys unique to the glacially carved Tennessee River valley floor. The Tennessee Valley's distinctive geography — wide, flat bottomlands flanked by limestone ridges and the massive Wheeler Reservoir impoundment — creates a humid, warm microclimate that extends the honey flow season compared to surrounding uplands, producing thick, full-flavored honeys from the valley's rich mix of agricultural and native flowering plants. The festival features an Alabama Tennessee Valley honey judging competition with specialty classes for cotton blossom, sweet clover, and wildflower honeys; educational tours of Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge pollinator habitats; demonstrations of Tennessee Valley commercial beekeeping adapted to the region's hot, humid summers; artisan honey and beeswax vendors from the seven-county Tennessee Valley area; sessions from Alabama Extension on managing hives in the Valley's challenging summer heat; and a family program celebrating the role of honeybee pollination in the Tennessee Valley's large-scale agricultural economy.
