Elko — Elko County's Western Folklife Center city and the host of the nation's premier National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, set at the foot of the Ruby Mountains where the Humboldt River valley, the Ruby Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, the Independence Mountains, and the vast northeastern Nevada basin-and-range landscape create an exceptional high-desert honey terroir built on alfalfa from the Humboldt valley's irrigated farmlands, desert wildflower from the sagebrush steppe and rabbitbrush, high-elevation mountain wildflower from the Ruby Mountains Wilderness subalpine meadows where summer wildflowers bloom in spectacular abundance, and the unique Elko County desert forb complex of globemallow, desert phlox, and phacelia that pollinators work intensely during Nevada's brief but intense summer nectar flow — in a community renowned for its role as the cultural capital of the American cowboy tradition through the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, its position as a service center for Nevada's mining and ranching industries, and its gateway access to the Ruby Mountains 'Nevada's Alps' — is home to a multigenerational beekeeping community that has mastered the unique challenges of high-desert apiculture in one of Nevada's most productive honey-producing counties. This January festival at the Western Folklife Center celebrates Elko's honey heritage alongside the Cowboy Poetry Gathering tradition, with honey producers from across Elko, Lander, and Eureka counties, competitive honey shows featuring rare Ruby Mountains alpine wildflower, alfalfa, desert wildflower, and rabbitbrush varietal honeys, guided tastings exploring the extraordinary flavor complexity of high-altitude Great Basin honey, and educational programs connecting Nevada ranching and beekeeping traditions that have coexisted on the high-desert range for over a century.
