Honey Festival · September 6–7, 2033 · Galena, Illinois
Galena — the historic lead mining boomtown and home of Ulysses S. Grant in Jo Daviess County, northwestern Illinois — anchors one of the most biologically diverse honey-producing landscapes in the Midwest: the Driftless Area, a region that escaped the last glaciation, preserving ancient river bluff topography and unglaciated soils that support plant communities found nowhere else in the surrounding Midwest. The Driftless Area's remarkable biodiversity — over 1,500 native plant species in Jo Daviess County alone — translates into extraordinary honey. Galena-area beekeepers harvest from basswood/American linden (Tilia americana), which blooms in late June and produces a classic Midwest honey with a distinctive herbal, minty quality prized by connoisseurs; white Dutch clover (Trifolium repens) from the dairy and cattle farms of the Illinois Driftless; black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) from the bluff edges in May, producing a light, slightly floral honey that crystallizes to white; and goldenrod (Solidago spp.) providing the major fall nectar flow. Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) and other prairie wildflowers from restored prairie patches contribute a diverse summer honey. The festival in Galena's historic downtown celebrates Grant's hometown heritage alongside the Driftless Area's exceptional honey diversity with educational honey tastings, hive demonstrations, native plant walks along the Galena River bluffs, and partnerships with local farm breweries producing wildflower honey meads. Illinois beekeeping dates to the mid-19th century, and Jo Daviess County's combination of Driftless biodiversity and agricultural clover production has made it one of the state's premier honey counties.
