Honey Festival · September 19–20, 2027 · Galena, Illinois
Galena — the remarkably preserved antebellum river town in the northwestern corner of Illinois, home of Ulysses S. Grant and once the lead-mining capital of the American frontier, perched on the bluffs above the Galena River just east of its confluence with the Mississippi — occupies a botanically exceptional position where the Driftless Area's unglaciated limestone hills, the Mississippi River bottomland forests, and the remnant prairies of Jo Daviess County create a honey landscape of extraordinary diversity: basswood linden from the bluff forests, black locust from the limestone-soil hillsides, sweet clover from the Mississippi floodplain, and a rich tapestry of native prairie wildflowers from the Driftless Area's intact remnant savannas that support beekeeping traditions stretching back to the earliest Euro-American settlement of the Upper Midwest. Galena's Old Market House State Historic Site and Grant Park's scenic overlook setting host this late-September harvest festival celebrating the honey heritage of Illinois's Driftless Region, featuring beekeepers from Jo Daviess, Stephenson, and Carroll counties who harvest the region's signature basswood, black locust, and mixed hardwood wildflower honeys from hives placed amid the Driftless Area's ecologically intact limestone-bluff landscape. The Galena area's honey reflects the ecological uniqueness of the Driftless Area — the only part of Illinois that was never glaciated — with honey varietals that carry the flavors of plant communities found nowhere else in the state: remnant dry prairie flora, oak savanna species, and the rich basswood and black locust flows of the lime-rich Driftless bluff forests.
