Honey Festival · October 16–17, 2027 · Georgetown, South Carolina
Georgetown — the Georgetown County seat on Winyah Bay at the confluence of the Sampit, Black, PeeDee, Waccamaw, and Pee Dee rivers, South Carolina’s third-oldest city and once the rice capital of colonial America where enslaved African expertise in wetland rice cultivation created the extraordinary plantation wealth of the antebellum Lowcountry — occupies one of South Carolina’s most ecologically distinctive honey landscapes: the Lowcountry’s brackish estuaries, tidal freshwater swamps, and longleaf pine savannas of Georgetown County produce some of the most distinctive coastal plain honey varietals in the entire southeastern United States, with gallberry, titi blossom, tupelo, and the flowering shrubs of the ACE Basin’s extraordinary natural heritage creating a Lowcountry honey character of remarkable complexity and geographic specificity. The Georgetown Historic Waterfront along Front Street — one of the Southeast’s most intact colonial-era waterfronts, with its eighteenth-century rice plantation architecture and active harbor — hosts this mid-October festival celebrating Georgetown County’s beekeeping heritage and the Lowcountry honey varieties of South Carolina’s tidal river country, featuring beekeepers from Georgetown, Horry, Williamsburg, and Berkeley counties who maintain hives throughout the freshwater swamps, longleaf savanna restorations, and the diverse floral ecosystems of Georgetown County’s extraordinary wetland heritage.
