Georgetown Winyah Bay Honey & Rice Culture Heritage Festival 2032

Honey Festival · October 8–9, 2032 · Georgetown, South Carolina

Georgetown — South Carolina's third-oldest city on Winyah Bay at the confluence of the Sampit, Black, Waccamaw, Pee Dee, and Great Pee Dee Rivers, where the antebellum rice plantation landscape transformed the Lowcountry and where the surrounding Carolina Bays, Carolina Sandhills, and coastal estuary create one of the most distinctive honey-producing environments in the American South: gallberry honey from the bay swamp margins and the pocosin thickets of Hobcaw Barony, tallow tree honey from the naturalized Chinese tallow groves that produce an exceptionally pale, light-flavored varietal beloved by South Carolina honey connoisseurs, black gum honey from the blackwater river swamps of the Waccamaw and Black River corridors, cotton blossom honey from the surviving agricultural lands of Georgetown County's former plantation landscape, coastal wildflower honey from the barrier island and tidal marsh communities of Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach, and longleaf pine savanna wildflower honey from the managed upland habitats of the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center. This October festival at Front Street Park celebrates Georgetown County's extraordinary honey heritage through beekeepers from the Lowcountry, the Pee Dee, and the Grand Strand, offering competitive honey shows featuring South Carolina's signature gallberry, tallow tree, and tupelo varietals, guided tastings exploring the unique flavor profiles of Winyah Bay honey country, educational programs on beekeeping in blackwater river ecosystems, and tours of the historic Georgetown waterfront that once shipped the finest rice in colonial America.
