Gettysburg Adams County Honey & Civil War Heritage Festival 2033

Honey Festival · September 27–28, 2033 · Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Gettysburg — site of the Civil War's decisive battle and Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address — anchors Adams County's distinctive South Mountain honey landscape where the Appalachian ridge system transitions to the Great Appalachian Valley's rich agricultural heart. Adams County's honey traditions reflect Pennsylvania's most important fruit-growing region combined with the South Mountain's woodland complexity. Apple blossom from Adams County's vast apple orchards — the county produces more apples than any other county in Pennsylvania and more than most states — provides the region's signature early spring honey flow in May: light gold, mildly fruity, with a delicate floral character that Pennsylvania orchardists have harvested since colonial times. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) from the South Mountain's rocky ridgelines and woodland margins follows in mid-May with a premium light honey. Basswood from the South Mountain's forest interior provides a prized July honey. Clover from the orchard floor cover crops and pastures contributes through summer. The 6,000-acre Gettysburg National Military Park — a sacred landscape managing one of North America's most ecologically managed battlefield sites — also maintains pollinator habitat within its restored grasslands. Adams County has documented beekeeping records dating to before the Civil War. The festival at Heritage Square celebrates the intersection of Civil War history, South Mountain heritage, and Adams County's extraordinary apple blossom honey tradition.
