Honey Festival · September 21–23, 2028 · Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Gettysburg — the Adams County seat and the site of the Civil War's most decisive battle, set in the South Mountain foothills amid Adams County's world-famous apple orchards — anchors one of Pennsylvania's most historically resonant and agriculturally productive honey-producing regions, where the Cumberland Valley's sprawling apple, peach, and cherry orchards, the South Mountain's hardwood forests, and the rolling farmland of the Pennsylvania German agricultural interior create a diverse spring-to-fall honey season of exceptional character. Adams County's honey landscape is shaped by the remarkable apple and stone-fruit blossom flows of May, when the county's concentration of commercial orchards — the largest in Pennsylvania — produces the delicately fruity apple blossom honey that South Mountain beekeepers prize and that has been the foundation of Adams County apiculture since the 18th century; the black locust and tulip poplar flows of the South Mountain forest belt; the buckwheat and sweet clover flows of the Pennsylvania German farm country that extends into the Cumberland Valley; and the goldenrod, aster, and late-season wildflower flows of the Gettysburg battlefield's preserved farmland and meadows. The Gettysburg National Military Park visitor center plaza and downtown Lincoln Square host this September festival celebrating Adams County's honey heritage in one of American history's most significant landscapes. The festival features a South Mountain Honey Competition with apple blossom, black locust, and buckwheat categories; culinary pairings of Adams County honey with Pennsylvania apple products, Penn Dutch heritage foodways, and artisan cheesemakers of the Cumberland Valley; Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association educational programs; and heritage exhibits celebrating the Gettysburg Address legacy, the Conewago Creek watershed's German immigrant farming culture, and the pre-Civil War free Black community of Adams County.
