Honey Festival · September 26–27, 2032 · Joplin, Missouri
Joplin — Jasper County's commercial center and the 'Crossroads of America' at the confluence of Routes 66 and 71, where the Ozark Plateau's dissected uplands meet the Springfield Plain at the edge of the tallgrass prairie, where Shoal Creek, Center Creek, and the Spring River watershed create an exceptionally diverse honey landscape of black locust from the Ozark limestone glades and ravines, basswood from the mature mixed hardwood forests of the Ozark National Forest transition, sweet clover and alfalfa from the Grand River bottomlands and upland farms, native prairie wildflower from the Cross Timbers remnants near the Kansas border, and the distinctive sumac, persimmon blossom, and ironweed of the Ozark-prairie ecotone that makes southwest Missouri a zone of remarkable botanical and honey diversity — in a community renowned for its remarkable Route 66 heritage, its historic downtown Grand Avenue Arts District, its recovery from the 2011 tornado and subsequent civic renaissance, and its position as the gateway to the Ozark Highlands — is home to a multigenerational beekeeping community whose families have worked hives across the lead and zinc mining district's reclaimed landscapes, now some of Missouri's most productive honey territory. This September festival at Ewert Park celebrates Joplin's honey heritage through producers from across the four-state Ozark region, competitive honey shows featuring regional black locust, basswood, sweet clover, sumac, and prairie wildflower varietal honeys, guided tastings exploring how the Ozark-prairie transition produces honey of dramatic complexity, educational programs on ecological restoration of the former mining landscape as premier pollinator habitat, and demonstrations of traditional Ozark beekeeping practices adapted to the region's unique mix of Appalachian hardwood and Great Plains flora.
