Apiary Tour · July 10, 2027 · Manhattan, Kansas
Kansas State University's agricultural campus in Manhattan hosts the Sunflower State's signature summer beekeeping gathering, combining an open apiary tour of KSU's research apiaries with Kansas Honey Producers Association education sessions and a prairie honey tasting. Kansas is one of America's most productive honey states, with the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie, Smoky Hills alfalfa farmlands, and High Plains sunflower fields creating exceptional and distinct varietal honeys: white sweet clover honey from the roadsides, alfalfa honey from the irrigation pivots, native wildflower honey from unplowed Flint Hills prairie remnants, and sunflower honey from western Kansas commercial fields. Field day sessions cover commercial queen production, colony nutrition for the prairie honey flow, and spray-safe beekeeping protocols for grain and oilseed-production regions.
