Honey Festival · September 27–28, 2033 · Kingston, New York
Kingston — New York's first capital and one of its oldest cities, founded by Dutch colonists in 1652 — anchors the mid-Hudson Valley at the point where the Catskill Mountains meet the river's broad tidal estuary. Ulster County's honey landscape reflects the extraordinary agricultural and ecological diversity of the Hudson Valley's middle reach. Basswood (Tilia americana) from the forest margins and street trees of the Catskill foothills provides the region's most valued honey: Kingston-area beekeepers prize their July basswood harvest for its exceptional flavor and light amber color. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) from the rocky hillsides above the Hudson provides an earlier, briefer flow of premium light honey in May. Apple blossom from Ulster County's historic apple orchards — the county has grown apples since Dutch settlement, and remains a major New York apple producer — contributes in mid-May. Wildflower honey from the Catskill Mountains' exceptional biodiversity rounds out the season. Hudson Valley honey has been served at the New York State Governor's Mansion and at farm-to-table restaurants throughout the region. Kingston's Senate House — where New York State's first constitution was drafted in 1777 — stands near the festival site on Broadway. The festival at Dietz Stadium celebrates Kingston's Dutch colonial heritage, its role in American revolutionary history, and the Hudson Valley's exceptional honey culture.
