Honey Festival · September 13–14, 2030 · La Crosse, Wisconsin
La Crosse — the Mississippi River city in La Crosse County at the confluence of the Black, La Crosse, and Mississippi rivers in the heart of the Driftless Area — occupies a dramatic landscape of river bluffs, coulees, bottomland hardwood forests, and upland prairies that makes the Driftless Area one of Wisconsin's most botanically distinctive honey-producing regions, yielding basswood, sweet clover, goldenrod, black locust, and bluff-prairie wildflower honey. This September festival at Riverside Park celebrates the Mississippi Valley beekeeping tradition from La Crosse, Trempealeau, and Vernon County producers, featuring honey variety tastings, river bluff prairie wildflower nature walks with UW-La Crosse biology faculty, and historic presentations on how German and Norwegian immigrant communities established the beekeeping heritage of the Upper Mississippi Valley in the 19th century. The event also features mead pairings with local Driftless-sourced foods and connects urban visitors to the coulee country agricultural landscape surrounding La Crosse, where the Driftless Area's unglaciated terrain has preserved botanical communities unchanged since the last Ice Age.
