Honey Fair · September 11–12, 2027 · Lancaster, New Hampshire
Lancaster — the Coos County seat in New Hampshire's North Country, situated in the Upper Connecticut River valley where New Hampshire's White Mountains give way to the wide agricultural intervales of the northern Connecticut River watershed, the center of New Hampshire's most remote and sparsely settled region — occupies one of New Hampshire's most distinctive and underappreciated honey landscapes: the Connecticut River intervales' rich alluvial meadows, the surrounding Northern Forest hardwood and softwood forests, and the agricultural fields and orchards that characterize Coos County's river corridor create a northern New Hampshire honey landscape of remarkable purity, where the primary honey sources are basswood, sugar maple, late-season goldenrod and aster, and the diverse wildflower meadows of the Connecticut River's broad northern valley that contrast sharply with the granite-and-conifer landscape of the White Mountains to the south. Lancaster's Main Street Historic District hosts this mid-September harvest fair celebrating the North Country's beekeeping heritage and the Northern Forest honey varieties of New Hampshire's Coos County, featuring beekeepers from Coos County's scattered farms, sugarhouses, and forest operations who maintain hives throughout the Connecticut River valley's agricultural intervales, Northern Forest logging roads, and the natural meadows and wetlands of the Upper Connecticut watershed. Lancaster's honey landscape reflects the North Country's position at the northern edge of New England's agricultural zone: the Connecticut River intervales create a warmer, more sheltered microclimate than the surrounding mountains and plateau, supporting basswood and sugar maple honey flows unusual for this latitude, while the late-season goldenrod and aster of the open meadows and roadsides provide the amber-colored fall honey that has been a North Country staple for generations.
