Las Cruces Hatch Valley Honey & Chile Harvest Festival 2028

Honey Festival · September 7–9, 2028 · Las Cruces, New Mexico

Las Cruces — the Doña Ana County seat and the heart of the Mesilla Valley at the junction of the Rio Grande and the Jornada del Muerto desert — anchors one of the Southwest's most productive and distinctive honey-producing regions, where the Hatch Valley's world-famous chile agriculture, the Mesilla Valley's pecan orchards and cotton fields, and the Chihuahuan Desert's remarkable wildflower diversity combine to produce honey varietals of extraordinary intensity and character. Doña Ana County's honey landscape is shaped by the pecan blossom flow of spring, when the Mesilla Valley's vast pecan groves stretching from Hatch to El Paso open for a brief but intense pollination period; the desert willow, mesquite, and catclaw acacia flows of the Chihuahuan Desert that surround the irrigated valley; the chile blossom and cotton blossom flows of the Hatch Valley's signature crops in July and August; and the desert marigold, Apache plume, and late-season wildflower flows of the Organ Mountains and San Andres Mountain foothills that extend the New Mexico honey season through fall. The Young Park and Mesilla Historic Plaza host this September festival celebrating Doña Ana County's Río Grande agricultural heritage and the unlikely marriage of chile culture and apiculture in one of America's most productive desert honey landscapes. The festival features a New Mexico Honey Competition with desert wildflower, mesquite, and pecan blossom categories; culinary pairings connecting Hatch green chile with local mesquite honey in the New Mexican tradition; New Mexico Beekeepers Association educational programs on desert colony management and drought resilience; and heritage programs celebrating the Tortugas Pueblo, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, and the Spanish colonial acequia irrigation traditions that transformed the Mesilla Valley into an agricultural oasis.
