Metamora Canal Town Honey & Heritage Fair 2027

Honey Fair · October 9–10, 2027 · Metamora, Indiana

Metamora — the exquisitely preserved Whitewater Canal town in southeastern Indiana's Franklin County, one of the state's few intact 19th-century canal-era communities with its operational grist mill, aqueduct, and historic Whitewater Canal State Historic Site — sits within the rich agricultural landscape of the Whitewater River valley, where the rolling glacial till plains of southeastern Indiana's mixed farming country produce a classic Indiana honey flow from white clover, sweet clover, basswood linden, black locust, and tulip poplar that has supported beekeeping in this corner of the state since the earliest pioneer settlement along the National Road. The Metamora Historic Area's scenic canal-town setting, featuring the operating Metamora Grist Mill and the Whitewater Canal's carefully restored towpath and aqueduct, hosts this mid-October heritage fair celebrating the honey traditions of Indiana's canal era and agricultural heritage, featuring beekeepers from Franklin, Union, and Fayette counties who maintain hives in the Whitewater valley's mixed hardwood and agricultural landscape. Indiana's Whitewater River valley represents the eastern edge of the state's classic corn-and-soybean-belt honey landscape: white clover and sweet clover from fencerows and roadside margins; basswood from the intact woodlot belts that divide southeastern Indiana's family farms; and black locust from the limestone-soil hillsides and abandoned railroad corridors that thread through the valley — creating a honey profile that reflects Indiana's agricultural heritage at its most intact and historic.
