Honey Festival · October 4–5, 2031 · Muskogee, Oklahoma
Muskogee — the Muskogee County city on the Arkansas River at the heart of Indian Territory, named for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation whose ancestral homeland in the Oklahoma Cross Timbers and prairie landscape supports an extraordinary diversity of Cross Timbers oak scrub, prairie clover, black locust, sumac, native wildflower, and goldenrod that yields some of Oklahoma's most distinctively flavored honeys from the forested bottomlands and upland grasslands of northeastern Oklahoma — is home to a beekeeping community that honors both the region's Native American heritage and the agricultural traditions of Oklahoma's Five Civilized Tribes who brought beekeeping knowledge from their southeastern homelands along the Trail of Tears. This October festival at Honor Heights Park — famed for its spectacular azalea blooms each spring — celebrates Muskogee County's deep connection to the land and its honey traditions through producers from across the Cherokee, Muscogee, and Choctaw Nation territories, competitive honey shows featuring Oklahoma's distinctive Cross Timbers, prairie clover, and tulip poplar varietals, educational programs on the historical and cultural importance of honey in Five Civilized Tribes food traditions, demonstrations connecting Native American ethnobotanical knowledge of Oklahoma's pollinator plants with contemporary beekeeping practice, and culinary programs pairing northeastern Oklahoma honey with the region's remarkable blend of Native, Southern, and Great Plains food traditions.
