Honey Festival · April 25–26, 2032 · Nacogdoches, Texas
Nacogdoches — the oldest town in Texas, an East Texas Piney Woods city founded as a Spanish mission in 1779 on the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, where the Angelina and Attoyac River watersheds and the longleaf pine savanna of the Davy Crockett and Angelina National Forests create one of the most botanically distinctive honey-producing landscapes in the American South: yaupon holly honey from the native Ilex vomitoria shrubs that blanket the Piney Woods understory and produce a subtle, complex honey varietal unique to the Gulf Coast plain, tallow tree honey from the naturalized Chinese tallow groves that have transformed much of East Texas's agricultural landscape and produce an exceptionally pale, light-flavored honey beloved by Texas honey connoisseurs, native wildflower honey from the longleaf pine savanna restorations and pitcher plant bogs of the Angelina National Forest, dogwood blossom honey from the flowering dogwood-rich cove forests along the Attoyac and Angelina River corridors, and gallberry honey from the bay swamp margins and coastal plain wetlands of the Sabine National Forest. This April festival at Banita Creek Trail celebrates Nacogdoches County's extraordinary Piney Woods honey heritage through beekeepers from East Texas and western Louisiana, offering competitive honey shows featuring the region's signature yaupon holly, tallow tree, and gallberry varietals, guided tastings exploring East Texas honey terroir, and tours of Nacogdoches's historic district that preserves nine historic homes from the Spanish colonial period.
