Honey Fair · April 22–23, 2033 · Natchez, Mississippi
Natchez — the oldest European settlement on the Mississippi River and once the wealthiest city per capita in North America — sits at the southern terminus of the 444-mile Natchez Trace, one of North America's oldest pathways, now flanked by the Natchez Trace Parkway's corridor of restored native vegetation. Adams County's honey landscape is dominated by Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera), introduced to the Gulf South in the 18th century and now naturalized across the region's bottomlands: tallow produces a prolific summer honey flow, pale and very sweet, that Mississippi beekeepers rely on for their largest harvests. Gallberry (Ilex glabra) from the coastal plain flatwood remnants nearby provides a premium light amber honey. Tulip poplar from the loess bluff forests above the river adds the major spring flow. White clover from pastures throughout Adams County contributes through summer. The Natchez Trace Parkway's managed landscape now contains 5,000+ acres of native wildflower habitat supporting year-round forage. Natchez has one of Mississippi's oldest documented beekeeping traditions: early account books from antebellum plantations mention honey production alongside cotton and tobacco. The fair at Bluff Park — on the high loess bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River — celebrates the agricultural heritage and complex honey traditions of America's oldest continuously occupied city.
