Ocala — the Marion County 'Horse Capital of the World' at the heart of Florida's limestone karst uplands, where the Ocala National Forest — the southernmost national forest in the continental United States and home to the world's largest sand pine scrub ecosystem — supports one of Florida's most diverse honey landscapes, with exceptional forage sources including gallberry, saw palmetto, tallow tree, scrub oak blossom, sandhill wildflower, and the rare native wildflower of the limestone sink prairies that make Marion County's honey among the most distinctive and ecologically significant in the entire Southeast — is home to a thriving beekeeping community serving both the thoroughbred horse farm communities and Ocala's growing artisan food movement. This March festival at the Ocala Downtown Square celebrates Marion County's remarkable honey heritage through producers from across the Ocala National Forest region, competitive honey shows featuring Florida's prized gallberry, saw palmetto, and Ocala scrub wildflower mono-varietals, guided tastings pairing Florida honey with locally produced thoroughbred-region artisan foods, educational programs on the role of the Ocala National Forest in sustaining Florida's wild honey bee populations, and demonstrations connecting the ecological uniqueness of the limestone karst landscape with the flavors and terroir of Marion County's celebrated local honey.
