Honey Festival · September 13–14, 2031 · Point Pleasant, West Virginia
Point Pleasant — the Mason County city at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers in western West Virginia, where the legendary Battle of Point Pleasant marked the opening of Trans-Allegheny frontier settlement in 1774, and where the Ohio River bottomland forests, Kanawha River corridor, and Mason County uplands support exceptional populations of tulip poplar, black locust, basswood, white clover, and goldenrod that produce some of West Virginia's most distinctive Ohio River valley honeys from a landscape shaped by two and a half centuries of Appalachian frontier agricultural heritage — is home to a beekeeping community that embodies the self-sufficient spirit of the West Virginia mountain state's western gateway. This September festival at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park — named for the Native American term meaning "point between two waters" — celebrates Mason County's remarkable honey heritage through producers from across Mason, Jackson, Putnam, and Cabell counties in the Kanawha and Ohio Valley corridor, competitive honey shows featuring West Virginia's prized black locust, tulip poplar, and Ohio River bottomland wildflower varietals, educational programs on the historical role of beekeeping in Trans-Allegheny frontier settlement, guided tastings pairing Point Pleasant honey with West Virginia pepperoni rolls, ramp preserves, and locally produced sorghum, and presentations connecting the region's rich natural history to the ecological diversity that makes the Ohio River Valley one of the Appalachian region's most productive honey landscapes.
