The Seneca Falls Heritage Park alongside the historic Seneca-Cayuga Canal hosts this mid-September festival celebrating the Finger Lakes’ beekeeping heritage and the wine-country honey varieties of central New York’s most productive agricultural region, featuring beekeepers from Seneca, Ontario, Wayne, and Schuyler counties who maintain hives in the vineyard corridors, apple orchards, and wildflower meadows that characterize the Finger Lakes’ unique agricultural landscape. The Finger Lakes honey landscape is defined by the thermal moderation provided by the deep glacial lakes: the lakes’ heat storage extends the growing season several weeks beyond the surrounding plateau, allowing grape vines and fruit trees to ripen consistently and providing the honeybees with an extended bloom season that their colleagues on the plateau cannot access, while the concentration of vineyards, orchards, and the diverse weedy flora of farm margins creates a mosaic of floral diversity that results in honey of unusual complexity and terroir.
