Southern Maryland Honey & Tobacco Barn Heritage Festival 2027

Honey Festival · September 4–5, 2027 · Solomons, Maryland

Calvert County — nestled between the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay on Southern Maryland's peninsula — hosts this late-summer celebration of the region's extraordinary tulip poplar and black locust honey, produced in the same river-bottom hardwood forests that once sheltered historic tobacco drying barns. Southern Maryland beekeepers work landscapes defined by the Chesapeake's maritime moderation: the county's tobacco allotment heritage has left intact swaths of old-growth hardwood corridors and wildflower meadows that now serve as premier honey-bee forage. The festival features a Southern Maryland varietal honey tasting with side-by-side comparisons of tulip poplar, black locust, and Chesapeake-coastal wildflower honey, heritage tobacco barn tours repurposed as honey and beeswax artisan markets, local oystermen and honey-pairing events celebrating the Chesapeake's twin industries, educational sessions from University of Maryland Extension Master Beekeepers, and hands-on demonstrations of traditional wax-capping and extraction methods.
