Honey Festival · July 12–13, 2030 · Spearfish, South Dakota
Spearfish — the northern Black Hills gateway city in Lawrence County on Spearfish Creek — sits at the edge of the ponderosa pine-covered Black Hills uplift where beekeepers harvest distinctive sweet clover, alfalfa, and Black Hills wildflower honey from apiaries tucked among limestone canyon walls, granite outcroppings, and the birch, aspen, and oak-ringed valleys of Spearfish Canyon and the surrounding Bear Lodge Mountains. This July festival at Spearfish City Park celebrates Lawrence County beekeeping traditions alongside the spectacular Black Hills landscape, featuring honey from western South Dakota producers, guided wildflower nature walks through Spearfish Canyon State Scenic Byway, educational programs on ponderosa pine and wildflower ecology from Black Hills State University natural science faculty, and honey and wild game pairings celebrating the culinary traditions of the Northern Plains. The event draws visitors from across the Black Hills region and eastern Wyoming, connecting urban residents to the unique convergence of Rocky Mountain and Great Plains landscapes that defines the Black Hills honey terroir.
