Tahlequah Illinois River Honey & Cherokee Heritage Festival 2033

Honey Festival · May 17–18, 2033 · Tahlequah, Oklahoma

Tahlequah — capital of the Cherokee Nation and one of Oklahoma's oldest cities, founded in 1839 at the end of the Trail of Tears — anchors Cherokee County's exceptional honey landscape in the Cookson Hills of northeastern Oklahoma's Ozark plateau. Cherokee County's honey traditions draw on the Ozark-Ouachita mountain transition zone's biological richness. Tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) from the Boston Mountain Ozark Plateau hardwood forests provides the region's finest spring honey: Tahlequah-area beekeepers harvest a premium light-amber tulip poplar honey from the Cookson Hills' forested slopes in late May, prized for its complex herbal-fruity character. Black locust from the old field margins and rocky hillsides of eastern Cherokee County provides an earlier May flow of highly aromatic light honey. Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) flowers from the bottomland thickets — common throughout the Illinois River watershed — provide a brief but distinctive spring flow. Goldenrod from the Cookson Hills meadows closes the season in September. The Illinois River — one of Oklahoma's cleanest rivers, designated a state scenic river — flows through the heart of this festival's territory. The Cherokee Nation government, headquartered in Tahlequah, maintains traditional knowledge about indigenous honey plants and pollinator relationships. The festival at Norris Park celebrates the Cherokee Nation's living heritage and the extraordinary honey traditions of northeastern Oklahoma's hill country.
