Honey Festival · July 12–14, 2028 · Traverse City, Michigan
Traverse City — the county seat of Grand Traverse County and the self-proclaimed 'Cherry Capital of the World' — sits at the southern tip of Grand Traverse Bay in the heart of Michigan's Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas, a narrow finger of land jutting into Lake Michigan whose unique Great Lakes maritime microclimate makes it one of the most celebrated cherry-growing and honey-producing landscapes in the Midwest. Grand Traverse County's honey landscape is anchored by the extraordinary May cherry blossom flow, when tens of thousands of acres of sweet and tart cherry orchards covering the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas open simultaneously in a brief but intense nectar surge that produces the prized pale cherry blossom honey that Michigan beekeepers follow north each spring; the basswood linden groves of the surrounding Traverse City State Forest lands; the raspberry canes and apple orchards of the inland agricultural valleys; and the coastal wildflower and fireweed flows along Lake Michigan's eastern shoreline. The Northwestern Michigan Fairgrounds host this July festival celebrating Traverse City's cherry blossom honey heritage, drawing beekeepers from Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie, and Antrim counties who maintain the Old Mission Peninsula's tradition of integrated orchard and apiary management where cherry pollination and honey production work in concert. The festival features a Cherry Blossom Honey Competition with judging of the region's rare varietal alongside conventional Michigan varieties; culinary pairings connecting Traverse City honey with local cherry products, artisan cheeses, and the Great Lakes fish tradition; Michigan Beekeepers Association educational programming on orchard pollination management; and heritage exhibits celebrating the French-Odawa fur trade legacy and the German and Polish immigrant farming communities that built the Traverse City cherry industry.
