Honey Fair · July 14–16, 2028 · Wetumpka, Alabama
Wetumpka — the 'City of Natural Wonder' at the ancient Wetumpka Impact Crater on the Coosa River in Elmore County — sits at the crossroads of Alabama's Piedmont uplands and the Upper Coastal Plain, a landscape rich with tulip poplar, sourwood, wild muscadine, black locust, and mixed hardwood forest wildflowers that produce some of the most distinctive honey in central Alabama. Fort Toulouse/Fort Jackson Park's dramatic Coosa River confluence setting hosts this summer county fair celebrating the honey heritage of Elmore, Tallapoosa, and Coosa counties, where beekeeping families along the Coosa River impoundments and Talladega National Forest foothills have maintained apiary traditions for generations. The Coosa River corridor creates a distinctive microclimate where sourwood (at its southernmost reliable range limit), tulip poplar, black locust, and rich summer wildflower meadows along the river bottom support exceptional honey production from late April through August. Featured events include the Elmore County Honey Judging Competition with specialty classes for sourwood and tulip poplar varietals; guided walks through the Coosa River floodplain wildflower pollinator habitat at historic Fort Toulouse; demonstrations by Central Alabama Beekeepers Association members on managing hives in Alabama's warm, humid climate; artisan honey, mead, and beeswax vendors from across the Coosa-Tallapoosa watershed; hands-on candle-making and comb-honey extraction demonstrations; and living history programs connecting pre-contact and colonial honey-hunting traditions at the site where French and later American forts guarded the Coosa-Tallapoosa confluence.
