Carson City — Nevada's capital city nestled between the Sierra Nevada and the Virginia Range at 4,700 feet elevation — occupies one of the Great Basin's most interesting honey landscapes. Ormsby County's beekeepers work the transition zone where Sierra Nevada foothill flora meets the desert: a mosaic that yields distinctively complex honey unlike the pure desert varieties from lower elevations. Sage (Artemisia tridentata) from the surrounding Great Basin desert provides Nevada's most distinctive honey plant: Great Basin sage honey is light-gold, water-white in exceptional years, with the characteristic mentholated-herbal aromatics that make Nevada sage honey prized by connoisseurs. Alfalfa from the Carson Valley's irrigated fields south of Carson City provides the most productive summer flow. Sweet clover from roadsides and field margins adds to the summer harvest. Yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis) — introduced but now widespread in Nevada's disturbed grasslands — produces a late-summer honey prized despite the plant's invasive status. Apple blossom and fruit tree blossoms from Carson Valley orchards contribute in May. The Nevada State Capitol is Nevada's only state capital without a county seat. The market at the Brewery Arts Center in the heart of historic Carson City celebrates the intersection of frontier mining heritage, Great Basin ecology, and Nevada's growing craft honey culture.
