Florence — gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America — occupies a unique honey landscape at the junction of Lane County's coastal rainforest, freshwater wetlands, and the extraordinary dune ecosystem. The Oregon Dunes' distinctive ecology — a mosaic of open dune, shore pine forest, wetland, and coastal scrub — supports honey plants rarely found in combination elsewhere. Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) from the bog complexes south of Florence near the North Bend area provides a premium light honey with tartly fruity undertones harvested in early summer. Shore pine (Pinus contorta) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) forest edges support diverse understory wildflowers including vanilla leaf, oxalis, and various native asters. Himalayan blackberry (Rubus armeniacus) — introduced but now pervasive in Oregon coastal forests and clearings — provides one of the most prolific summer honey flows: a medium-amber honey with rich berry-sweet aromatics that Lane County beekeepers prize for the bulk of their summer harvest. Beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) from dune margins adds a delicate early-summer note. The Heceta Head Lighthouse — one of the most photographed lighthouses on the West Coast — stands on the headland just north of Florence. The market at Florence's historic Old Town waterfront on the Siuslaw River celebrates the Oregon Coast's unique ecological heritage alongside the coastal honey traditions of Lane County.
