Conway Waccamaw Neck Honey & Grand Strand Heritage Festival 2033

Honey Festival · October 11–12, 2033 · Conway, South Carolina

Conway — county seat of Horry County and the historic gateway to the Grand Strand — anchors the Waccamaw Neck's exceptional coastal honey landscape where the Carolina Low Country's blackwater rivers meet the Atlantic coastal plain. Horry County's honey traditions draw on the remarkable ecological diversity of the Waccamaw watershed: one of the most species-rich areas on the East Coast, with more endemic plant species than any other watershed in the region. Gallberry (Ilex glabra) from the Waccamaw watershed's vast flatwood and pocosin wetlands provides the foundation of the region's honey production: gallberry honey is water-white to light amber, mild and clean, and has been commercially produced in the Carolina coastal plain since the 19th century. Tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) from the Waccamaw River's blackwater cypress-tupelo swamps — the Waccamaw is one of the few South Carolina rivers still supporting natural tupelo stands — provides a premium ultra-light honey harvested in early May. Sourwood from the Piedmont transition further inland adds quality during late summer. The Carolina bays — oval depressions of unknown origin unique to the Atlantic coastal plain — support specialist wildflowers found nowhere else. Horry County beekeepers work some of the most botanically diverse honey landscapes in North America. The festival at Conway Riverwalk Park celebrates the Waccamaw Neck's ecological heritage and Grand Strand's coastal culture alongside the region's exceptional honey traditions.
