Honey Festival · September 19–21, 2027 · Wilson, North Carolina
Wilson — the Bright Leaf Tobacco Capital of the World in North Carolina's coastal plain — sits at the heart of one of the South's most underappreciated honey regions, where the transition from Piedmont red clay soils to Atlantic seaboard flatlands creates the rich agricultural mosaic supporting exceptional gallberry, cotton blossom, and tulip poplar honey production. The Wilson County Fairgrounds hosts this late-September festival celebrating the extraordinary varietal honey character of eastern North Carolina's coastal plain, where towering stands of gallberry (inkberry) holly produce one of the South's most distinctive light honeys alongside the tulip poplar, black locust, and clover that extend the honey flow across the Neuse and Tar river watersheds. The festival features a regional honey competition with classes for eastern Carolina varietal entries including gallberry, sourwood, and cotton blossom honeys unique to the coastal plain; tobacco barn heritage walks explaining the historic connection between beekeeping and tobacco farming in Wilson County; educational sessions from NC State Extension apiculture specialists on coastal plain colony management; demonstrations of eastern North Carolina's traditional rectangular super hive systems; pollinator garden tours showcasing native plantings supporting both managed and wild bees; and a craft honey and beeswax artisan market featuring producers from Wilson, Edgecombe, Nash, and Greene counties.
