Honey Festival · September 5–6, 2027 · Elkins, West Virginia
Elkins — Randolph County’s seat in the Tygart Valley at the heart of the Allegheny Highlands, the Davis & Elkins College city and gateway to Monongahela National Forest where the Central Appalachian hardwood forests of the Cheat Mountain and Shavers Fork highlands produce some of the most prized wildflower and sourwood-adjacent honey varietals in the eastern United States — hosts this September honey and mountain heritage festival in the downtown Elkins cultural district. Randolph County’s honey landscape is defined by the extraordinary diversity of Central Appalachian flora: the tulip poplar and black locust forests of the Tygart Valley floor produce bold varietal honeys of distinctive character, while the mixed hardwood ridges of the Monongahela National Forest’s high elevations — including the West Virginia spruce bog ecosystems of Canaan Valley and the heath barrens of Dolly Sods — contribute rare high-altitude wildflower varietals unlike those produced anywhere else in the Appalachians. The festival features Randolph, Pocahontas, Tucker, and Upshur County beekeepers presenting tulip poplar, black locust, and Central Appalachian mountain wildflower varietal honeys; educational programs from WVU Extension’s apiary program; Appalachian music and heritage programming celebrating West Virginia’s mountain culture; artisan vendors featuring WV artisan honey products, foraged goods, and mountain crafts; and guided tours of highland apiaries in the Monongahela National Forest’s flower-rich mountain landscapes.
