Florida Keys Honey & Tropical Blossom Winter Tasting 2028

Honey Tasting · January 19–21, 2028 · Key West, Florida

Key West — Monroe County's southernmost city at the tip of the Florida Keys island chain at 24.5 degrees north latitude — sits within one of North America's most unique and fragile tropical ecosystems, where the Florida Keys' distinctive silver buttonwood, black mangrove, white stopper, Spanish stopper, gumbo limbo, and flowering tropical hardwood hammock species create honey profiles found nowhere else in the continental United States. Key West's beekeepers manage colonies in a subtropical landscape just 90 miles north of Cuba, harvesting honeys from the Keys' unique assemblage of hammock trees, tropical flowering shrubs, and the buttonwood-mangrove fringing that is the ecological signature of the Florida Keys chain. Higgs Beach's oceanside setting hosts this winter honey tasting celebrating the rare tropical varietals produced in Monroe County's island chain, with participating beekeepers sharing honeys from throughout the Keys from Key Largo to Key West and the remote backcountry mangrove keys accessible only by boat. The tasting features guided flights of Keys tropical honeys — including rare buttonwood, black mangrove, and hammock wildflower varietals — paired with local seafood and tropical fruits; presentations on beekeeping in the Florida Keys' extreme heat, salt air, and hurricane-vulnerable landscape; guided kayak tours to mangrove honey plant habitats in the National Key Deer Refuge; artisan Florida Keys honey, hot sauce, and tropical fruit vendors; and educational programs on the Keys' critically endangered coral reef and hardwood hammock ecosystems and their importance to pollinator diversity.
