Honey Fair · August 27, 2027 – September 1, 2027 · Huron, South Dakota
Huron — Beadle County’s seat at the heart of James River valley agricultural country, home of the South Dakota State Fair since 1884 and one of the central Great Plains’ great beekeeping regions where the rolling prairie of eastern South Dakota produces sweet clover, alfalfa, native sunflower, and prairie wildflower honey of exceptional quality — hosts this late-August honey and beekeeping showcase at the South Dakota State Fair complex. Beadle County sits at the ecological transition between the James River lowlands and the Coteau des Prairies uplands, where the glacial till soils of eastern South Dakota support the dense sweet clover, alfalfa, and native grassland wildflower blooms that have made this region one of the nation’s historically significant honey-producing areas. The showcase features South Dakota honey competition with entries from Beadle, Spink, Hand, Hyde, and Buffalo counties; educational programs from South Dakota State Extension Apiary Program; demonstrations of centrifugal extraction and creamed honey production; artisan vendors featuring South Dakota prairie wildflower and sweet clover varietal honeys; and family programs on pollinator habitat restoration in the James River valley’s agricultural landscape.
