The Muskogee Depot District and Azalea Festival grounds host this mid-October artisan market celebrating Muskogee County’s beekeeping heritage and the Cross Timbers and Three Rivers honey varieties of eastern Oklahoma, featuring beekeepers from Muskogee, Wagoner, Cherokee, and Sequoyah counties who maintain hives throughout the Cross Timbers oak savannas, Arkansas River bottomlands, and the tribal nation farmlands of northeastern Oklahoma’s culturally distinctive landscape. Muskogee’s honey landscape reflects the ecological transition between the tallgrass prairie’s remnant native grasslands to the west and the Ouachita Mountain’s hardwood forests to the southeast: the Cross Timbers’ post oak and blackjack oak woodland creates a characteristic early-summer honey flow of mild intensity, followed by the summer wildflower diversity of the river corridors and the late-season sumac, goldenrod, and native prairie asters that give eastern Oklahoma’s fall honey its rich, full-bodied flavor.
