Nantucket's Straight Wharf and historic waterfront district hosts this late-August weekend celebrating the island's beekeeping heritage and the extraordinary maritime-influenced honey varietals produced by Nantucket's small community of island beekeepers, who have maintained hives on the island's heathlands, coastal bluff landscapes, and Conservation Foundation properties for generations. Nantucket's honey landscape is defined by the island's position at the edge of the Gulf Stream's influence: the maritime climate moderates temperature extremes and extends the flowering season in ways that differ significantly from mainland New England, with rosa rugosa (Japanese beach rose) providing a distinctive floral source that lends Nantucket honey a subtle fruity quality, while the island's extensive bayberry heaths produce a rare bayberry honey prized by collectors for its pale color and distinctive waxy, herbal flavor that reflects this uniquely coastal plant community.
