Norfolk — the Madison County seat and the largest city in northeastern Nebraska — sits on the Elkhorn River in a rolling glacial till landscape where the Dissected Till Plains meet the unglaciated Coteau des Prairies, creating a honey-producing region of remarkable productivity where the Elkhorn River corridor's sweet clover and basswood bottomlands combine with the vast alfalfa, sweet clover, and native wildflower fields of Madison, Pierce, Antelope, and Stanton counties to support some of Nebraska's most productive commercial and artisan beekeeping operations. Madison County's honey landscape is defined by the Elkhorn River bottomland's sweet clover flow, which gives northeastern Nebraska its signature white clover and sweet clover varietal honeys; the basswood groves of the river corridor that provide the Midwest's prized linden honey to artisan producers; the vast alfalfa and sweet clover fields of the surrounding agricultural counties that form the backbone of Nebraska's commercial honey industry; and the native wildflower restorations of the Elkhorn River Watershed corridor that provide late-season goldenrod and aster flows.
