Thurston County’s honey landscape reflects the South Puget Sound’s ecological diversity: the maritime forests and bigleaf maple groves of the Olympia foothills produce a distinctive maple-blossom varietal of brief seasonal availability, while the Himalayan blackberry, native camas meadows, and the wildflower gardens of the Washington State Capitol Campus contribute to the region’s complex floral palette that supports a thriving urban and peri-urban beekeeping community. The festival features South Sound beekeepers from Thurston, Mason, Lewis, and Pierce counties presenting bigleaf maple, blackberry, and native wildflower varietal honeys; educational programs from Washington State University Extension on Pacific Northwest urban beekeeping; native plant and pollinator garden demonstrations; artisan vendors featuring South Sound honey, mead, and artisan bee products; family programs on Capitol Campus pollinator habitat; and guided Washington State Apiarists Association apiary tours in the South Puget Sound lowlands.
