Owensboro — Kentucky's fourth-largest city on the Ohio River in Daviess County, the 'Bar-B-Q Capital of the World' and the Bluegrass Music Center of the Universe, surrounded by some of western Kentucky's most productive honey-producing agricultural land — sits within a rich honey landscape where the Ohio River bottomlands' black locust, sweet clover, and river-corridor wildflowers combine with Daviess County's tobacco and soybean farming country to produce a distinctive western Kentucky honey profile: lighter and more floral than the sourwood and tulip poplar honeys of the eastern mountains, with a characteristic sweetness from the abundant white clover and sweet clover that blankets the River District's fields and fencerows. Smothers Park's scenic Ohio Riverfront setting — with its panoramic views of the Ohio River and Indiana's distant hills — hosts this mid-August heritage festival celebrating western Kentucky's honey and agricultural traditions, featuring beekeepers from Daviess, Henderson, and Ohio counties who maintain hives in the River District's characteristic mixed-agriculture landscape of tobacco barns, grain elevators, and river-bottom woodlands. Western Kentucky's Ohio River honey reflects the region's agricultural and geographic character: positioned in the transition zone between the Inner Bluegrass horse country to the east and the flat Purchase region to the west, Owensboro's beekeepers harvest honey from a landscape shaped by the river trade, tobacco culture, and the rich alluvial soils deposited by millennia of Ohio River floods — a honey geography with a distinctly western Kentucky personality.
