About this event

Taos — the Taos County pueblo city perched at 6,969 feet where the high desert plateau meets the dramatic Rio Grande Gorge and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise to nearly 13,000 feet, creating one of North America's most dramatic ecological transitions from desert floor to alpine tundra where chamisa, desert willow, Apache plume, Penstemon, and mountain meadow wildflower produce honeys of extraordinary flavor depth at the intersection of desert and mountain nectar flows — is home to a passionate beekeeping community that harvests some of the American Southwest's most uniquely flavored high-altitude honeys from the extraordinary floral diversity of the Taos Plateau's volcanic landscape. This September festival at Taos Plaza celebrates the town's deep connection to the land and its honeys through producers from across Taos, Rio Arriba, and Colfax counties, competitive classes for New Mexico's distinctive chamisa, desert wildflower, and mountain meadow varietals, educational programs on the unique challenges of high-altitude beekeeping in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, demonstrations on traditional Pueblo beekeeping practices and the historical importance of honey in southwestern Native American culture, and culinary showcases pairing Taos Plateau honey with the region's exceptional green chile, blue corn, and heritage apple traditions.
