Truth or Consequences — the geothermally active small city in the Rio Grande Rift Valley, renamed in 1950 to win a radio game show prize — occupies one of New Mexico's most interesting desert honey landscapes at 4,200 feet elevation along the middle Rio Grande. Sierra County's arid honey traditions draw on the desert shrublands and riparian corridors of the Chihuahuan Desert transition zone. Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) from the arroyos and washes of the Jornada del Muerto Desert just east of T or C provides a highly aromatic summer honey with orchid-like floral notes. Mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) from the Rio Grande floodplain bosque provides one of the most productive flows for local beekeepers: mesquite honey is pale, mildly sweet, and extremely valuable for long-distance marketing. Alfalfa from the Rio Grande valley's irrigated fields around Elephant Butte Reservoir contributes to the summer harvest. Apache plume (Fallugia paradoxa) and various native rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) species add to the desert fall flow. The nearby Spaceport America — the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport — operates from the same desert landscape that T or C beekeepers work. The market at Ralph Edwards Park on the Rio Grande riverfront celebrates the quirky heritage and remarkable desert honey traditions of this uniquely named American city.
