Wenatchee — the 'Apple Capital of the World' in the Columbia River valley on the eastern slope of the Cascades — hosts one of America's most distinctive honey festivals timed to coincide with the tail end of the region's famous apple blossom season, when hundreds of thousands of honeybee colonies deployed into Chelan and Douglas counties for orchard pollination service transition from pollination work to producing the aromatic, delicately flavored apple blossom honey that is the valley's signature varietal. The Wenatchee waterfront hosts this early-May festival celebrating the Pacific Northwest's orchard honey heritage, featuring the full range of Chelan County varietal honeys from spring apple and cherry blossom through summer wildflower and Cascade mountain meadow honey. The Wenatchee region represents one of the largest concentrations of commercial beekeeping in the western United States, with thousands of hives managed in the Columbia Basin's orchards and the wildflower meadows of the nearby Cascades and Okanogan Highlands. The festival features a Pacific Northwest honey competition with specialty classes for apple blossom, cherry blossom, and mountain meadow honeys; educational demonstrations of commercial orchard pollination practices; tours of Wenatchee Valley apple orchards in late bloom; tastings of Chelan County varietal honeys; artisan vendors from across central Washington's beekeeping community; and sessions from WSU Extension on the economic importance of honeybee pollination to Washington State's tree fruit industry.
