Cape May — the southern tip of New Jersey, America's oldest seaside resort and a National Historic Landmark District — sits at the apex of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean, creating a unique coastal microclimate that supports some of New Jersey's most distinctive honey plants. Cape May County's maritime honey landscape is anchored by a succession of coastal-adapted species rarely found inland. Sea lavender (Limonium carolinianum) from the vast salt marshes surrounding Delaware Bay produces a delicate, slightly briny honey that is New Jersey's most distinctive coastal variety. Beach plum (Prunus maritima) from the barrier island dune margins and maritime thickets provides a brief but exceptional May flow of light, fruity honey. Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) from Cape May's coastal scrub contributes in late July. Saltspray rose (Rosa rugosa) from the barrier beaches adds floral complexity. Goldenrod (Solidago) from the upland meadows and barrier island margins provides the most productive late-summer flow. The Cape May Peninsula serves as a critical migratory corridor for both birds and insects — the Cape May Bird Observatory monitors tens of millions of migrating birds annually — making this one of the East Coast's most ecologically significant honey landscapes.
