Honey Festival · July 15–16, 2033 · Guntersville, Alabama
Guntersville — the 'Water Sports Capital of the World' perched on a dramatic peninsula jutting into Lake Guntersville, the largest lake in Alabama and one of the Tennessee River's most spectacular impoundments, in Marshall County where the Cumberland Plateau's southern edge meets the Tennessee River valley. Lake Guntersville's 949 miles of shoreline, the Guntersville Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and the surrounding Sand Mountain plateau — one of Alabama's premier agricultural and beekeeping regions — create an extraordinary setting for a honey and wildlife festival that celebrates both the lake ecosystem and the region's thriving beekeeping tradition. Sand Mountain's plateau soils support some of Alabama's finest honey production: sourwood trees cover the mountainside hollows and produce the prized sourwood honey of the southern Appalachian fringe, tulip poplar towers in the cove forests along the lake's creek arms, white clover carpets the plateau's abundant hay fields, cotton blossom honey emerges from the valley farms in July, and goldenrod closes the season across the lakeside meadows in fall. The festival at Buck Island Pavilion features local Marshall County beekeepers presenting sourwood, tulip poplar, and wildflower varietals, honey tastings paired with Lake Guntersville catfish and bass, competitive honey shows, youth beekeeping workshops, and wildlife nature walks on the Guntersville Reservoir's exceptional bald eagle habitat.
