Newport — America's first resort city and one of the nation's great historic preservation showplaces, with 18th-century colonial and 19th-century Gilded Age mansions concentrated on its Aquidneck Island peninsula — anchors Newport County's maritime honey landscape along the east passage of Narragansett Bay. Rhode Island's smallest county has some of New England's most distinctive coastal honey plants. Coastal goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens) from Newport's seaside meadows, the Cliff Walk margins, and the beaches of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge provides the most productive late-summer flow: a rich amber honey with the robust aromatic quality of salt-air goldenrod that differs noticeably from inland varieties. Beach plum (Prunus maritima) from the barrier beaches of Sachuest Point and the sandy shores of Aquidneck Island's eastern side provides a brief early-May flow of exceptional fruity light honey. White clover from Newport County's historic estate lawns and agricultural margins contributes through summer. Rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa) from the barrier beach margins adds a distinctive early-summer note.
