Hot Springs — the historic spa city within Hot Springs National Park in Garland County, Arkansas, where the thermal springs of the Ouachita Mountains have drawn visitors for centuries and where the Ouachita National Forest's exceptional biological diversity supports one of Arkansas's most distinctive honey traditions. Hot Springs sits at the heart of the Ouachita Mountains — a geologically unique east-west oriented range of folded Paleozoic sandstone ridges and shale valleys that support a flora found nowhere else in North America, creating what botanists call one of the four centers of plant endemism in the eastern United States. This botanical uniqueness is reflected in the region's honey: Arkansas oak honey from the Quercus stellata (post oak) and Quercus marilandica (blackjack oak) savannas of the Ouachita sandstone ridges, black locust honey from the rocky mountain slopes in May, tulip poplar honey from the rich cove forests of the Caddo River watershed, native persimmon honey from the bottomland forests in late spring, sumac honey from the montane slopes in midsummer, and an extraordinary diversity of Ouachita wildflower honey from the park's protected native plant communities. The festival at the historic Arlington Resort Hotel celebrates Hot Springs' wellness tradition by pairing locally produced Ouachita honey with medicinal plant traditions, honey skincare demonstrations, and the therapeutic heritage of the spa city's unique thermal waters.
