Traverse City — the 'Cherry Capital of the World' straddling the 45th parallel exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole — anchors one of Michigan's most distinctive honey landscapes. The Old Mission Peninsula jutting into Grand Traverse Bay creates a microclimate moderating lake effect temperatures, making it ideal for both tart cherry production and exceptional honey flows. Cherry blossom (Prunus cerasus and P. avium) creates a spectacular but brief early-May honey flow: pale, mildly fruity, and intensely aromatic, it is prized by local beekeepers who sometimes spin a monofloral cherry blossom harvest. Basswood from the hardwood forests lining the peninsula's spine provides the region's most substantial honey flow in July. Clover from the orchards' inter-row cover crops contributes through summer. The surrounding National Cherry Festival — one of the Midwest's largest food festivals — has drawn millions of visitors to Traverse City since 1925. Grand Traverse County has one of Michigan's most active county beekeeping clubs, with beekeepers managing hives within the cherry orchards as critical pollinators before harvesting honey from the same blooms. The festival at Clinch Park on West Bay celebrates the intersection of cherry heritage, maritime culture, and fine honey production that defines the Traverse City experience.
