Johnson City — the Tri-Cities metropolitan anchor in Washington County in the upper Tennessee Valley at the foot of Roan Mountain — is surrounded by a rich Appalachian landscape of sourwood forests, tulip poplar groves, black locust hedgerows, and Blue Ridge wildflower meadows that supports some of Tennessee's finest mountain honey production in the Nolichucky and Watauga river watersheds. This September festival at Founder's Park on the Tweetsie Trail celebrates the Appalachian beekeeping tradition of upper East Tennessee, featuring sourwood honey from mountain apiaries in Washington, Carter, Unicoi, and Sullivan counties, guided hikes through the nearby Appalachian Trail corridor and Roan Mountain Highlands rhododendron gardens, connections to the Southern Appalachian Beekeeping Association, and educational programs on the Cherokee relationship with bees and honey in the Great Valley of Tennessee. The event draws visitors from across the Tri-Cities metro area and visitors to the Appalachian Highlands, serving as a gateway to understanding the biodiversity that makes Southern Appalachian sourwood honey one of the most prized varietals in American beekeeping.
